The smart thermostat in my apartment learns your schedule after about a week and starts adjusting temperature before you get home. Sounds minor, but it solved a problem I didn't know I had. Coming back to a freezing apartment because I'd turn heat off when leaving to save money, the system now handles that tradeoff automatically. Wall interface is just a small round screen showing current and target temperature. The app is where real data lives. It tracks energy usage by day and week, shows savings compared to the previous month, and factors in weather forecasts to pre-heat or pre-cool more efficiently. Scheduling works well because motion sensors detect when the apartment is empty rather than relying on a fixed timer. Adjusting from my phone when I'm in bed and too lazy to walk to the hallway is a small luxury. Energy reports revealed I was spending $40 more per month than necessary during winter just from poor timing.
