Editorial: A desk lamp with a warm-toned LED bulb illuminating a workspace at night, with a small white smart home hub visible on a shelf nearby.

IKEA's Tradfri smart bulbs cost $10 each, about a third of what Philips Hue charges for a comparable bulb. For basic color temperature control, they work fine. The gateway hub is $35 and connects up to 30 bulbs. Through the app, I schedule warm light in the evening and cooler light in the morning. My desk lamp shifts from 4000K to 2700K at 8 PM every night. The gradual transition is gentle enough that I don't notice it happening until I look up and the room feels cozier. Tradfri lacks the color range and third-party integrations Hue offers, and the app is slower. But for someone who just wants to automate basic warm-cool shifts without spending $200 on a starter kit, it's a reasonable entry point. The bulbs fit standard E26 sockets and look identical to regular LED bulbs, which matters because I don't want my apartment to look like a smart home showroom. My roommate has the Philips Hue setup in his room, and the color accuracy and responsiveness are noticeably better. A real gap in quality exists, but I'm not sure the difference justifies 3x the cost for my use case.
