#367 of 420Carhartt WIP Chore Coat
Personal photo: An olive-green cotton canvas chore coat hanging on a hook against a white wall, showing the four patch pockets, snap closure, and relaxed drape of the washed fabric.
Carhartt WIP took the classic workwear chore coat and repositioned it for a market that wants the silhouette without the construction site. On the Michigan coat in particular, a washed cotton canvas drapes more softly than the mainline Carhartt version. Slimmer through the body, the fit still keeps the boxy shoulder shape that makes the original iconic. Starting as a European license in the 1990s, WIP built its identity around streetwear credibility. It's a complicated relationship with a brand that was originally designed for manual labor, and I find the tension interesting. At $230 versus $80 for mainline Carhartt, the functional difference is minimal. Styling, washes, and the association with a specific aesthetic make the WIP version a different product aimed at different people. Pocket placement is identical, 4 patch pockets with bar-tack reinforcement, and the metal snap closures feel solid. I tried 1 on at a shop last week and the washed olive colorway had a warmth to it that new unwashed canvas doesn't have. Like it had already been broken in by someone else even though it was new.
