Press shot: A cordless stick vacuum with a green laser beam visible on a dark hardwood floor, illuminating dust particles in the laser's path.

I used a Dyson V15 Detect at my aunt's house over break and the green laser that shows dust particles on the floor is either genius or completely unnecessary depending on how you feel about cleaning. It mounts on the front of the cleaning head and projects a fan of green light at an angle that makes even tiny dust particles cast visible shadows. You can see exactly where the dirt is and whether you have gotten it all. Suction is strong enough that it pulled crumbs out of a rug that looked clean to my eye. An LCD screen on top shows a real-time count of particle sizes being collected. Cordless, running for about 60 minutes on the lower setting. At 6.8 pounds the weight is heavier than I expected for a stick vacuum. A trigger you have to hold down while vacuuming gets tiring after about 10 minutes. Dyson charges $750 for this model, which is absurd for a vacuum, but the engineering is genuinely impressive and the laser feature turns a boring chore into something weirdly satisfying.
