Found a pair of Birkenstock Bostons at a vintage shop. Suede was already broken in, soft and dark from wear. They fit like someone had shaped them to my feet. Cork footbed molds over time and the original owner had clearly done the hard part for me. Arch support hit exactly where I needed it from the first step. Clogs used to feel like a grandparent thing. On campus now, everyone's wearing them, with socks or without. Silhouette is chunky enough to look intentional with wide pants or cuffed jeans. Brass buckle on the strap has gone green in places. I like that more than the shiny new ones. Paid $35 for a shoe retailing at $160. Birkenstocks lasting long enough to have a secondhand market says a lot about the construction. Sole is firm but not hard. I can wear them all day without my feet getting tired, more than I can say for most sneakers. I wouldn't wear them in the rain because the suede spots. But for 8 months of the year, they're the only shoe I reach for.
