My roommate has a Google Nest Hub on the kitchen counter. At first I thought it was pointless. Why do you need a screen for a speaker? But I've come around. When idle, the display cycles through photos from Google Photos. Seeing old pictures from trips and dinners pop up randomly throughout the day makes the kitchen feel lived-in. Screen is 7 inches. Fabric base matches the countertop well enough that it doesn't look like tech sitting where food should be. We use it mostly for cooking timers and music. Touch controls are faster than yelling voice commands from across the room. Nest Hub costs $100 and the Lenovo Smart Display does the same thing for about $80. But the Google version integrates better with our existing Chromecast setup. Not essential, but it fills a space between phone and laptop I didn't know existed.
