Personal photo: a worn cruiser skateboard with soft orange wheels leaning against a brick wall near a campus building entrance, with a backpack strap visible at the edge of the frame.

A skateboard I ride to class is a 32-inch cruiser board with soft wheels that roll over sidewalk cracks without throwing me off. It cuts a 15-minute walk down to about 5 minutes which is the difference between making it to an 8 AM lecture and not. The board cost $60 and has no moving parts besides the wheels and bearings. Maintenance is basically nothing compared to a bike that needs chains and gears and air in the tires. I want everyone to try commuting on 1 because the feeling of pushing through campus in the morning with no headphones and no phone in your hand is the closest thing to freedom I've found in a daily routine.
