The oversized wool scarf I bought from a market vendor is about 3 feet wide and 7 feet long. It works as a scarf, a blanket, a shawl over a chair, and a pillow on a long bus ride. Versatility is why I carry it everywhere from November to March. The wool is thick and slightly scratchy against bare skin but soft over a jacket collar. Heather gray goes with everything I own. I wear it wrapped twice around my neck with the ends hanging down. The weight of it feels like a hug on cold mornings. Friends borrow it constantly. The communal use has turned a personal accessory into a shared object, which changes how I think about ownership. The vendor at the market said it was woven on a loom in Scotland. At $45, that felt fair for something handmade and oversized.
