Email newsletters that independent bookstores send out feel like letters from a friend who reads more than you do. I've started buying books based on their recommendations more than any bestseller list or algorithm. Format is usually a short personal essay by a staff member about what they read that week, followed by 3-5 picks with 1-paragraph descriptions that capture tone and feeling rather than plot summary. Writing is warm and specific unlike Amazon reviews manage. Because The person recommending the book has read thousands of others and can place it in a context that goes beyond "I liked this." Newsletters also carry information about author readings, signings. Community events, and they function as a calendar for the literary life of a neighborhood. Design is usually plain text or minimal HTML with a bookstore logo at the top. Lack of polish is part of the charm because it signals that the effort went into the writing rather than the template. I want more businesses to communicate this way because the newsletter format rewards depth over clickability. Subscribers have already opted in so the relationship starts from trust. The best independent bookstores have figured out that their recommendations are as valuable as their inventory, and the newsletter is the medium where that expertise travels beyond the physical store. Open rates for these newsletters are reportedly much higher than retail averages, which makes sense because people subscribe for the content, not the discounts.
