Custom embroidered patch market on Etsy and at craft fairs has become the main way people on campus personalize their jackets, bags. Hats, and the range of designs runs from ironic slogans to detailed botanical illustrations. Walking around, that patches have replaced pins as the primary decoration on denim jackets, probably because patches are flat enough not to stab you when you lean against something. Iron-on adhesive makes application easy, but the people who sew them on by hand get a more permanent bond and the visible stitching adds its own character. I like how a patched-up jacket tells a story through accumulation rather than through any single design choice. Best ones I've seen mix sources, combining a national park patch with a band logo and a cartoon character. Randomness reads as authentic unlike a coordinated set would.
