Press shot: A white Waymo Jaguar I-PACE with roof-mounted sensors parked at a pickup zone with a rider approaching the rear door.

I rode a Waymo in Phoenix last month and the strangest part wasn't the lack of a driver but how normal the ride felt after about 30 seconds. Car pulled up, I got in the back seat, tapped "start ride" on a screen mounted to the headrest. Jaguar I-PACE merged into traffic like any other vehicle. Ride was smooth, maybe too smooth, because it drives more cautiously than a human and that meant a few moments where it waited at an intersection longer than I'd have. But the app worked, the car navigated correctly, and I arrived where I was going without any weirdness.
