Curology sends a custom skincare formula to my door every month based on a questionnaire and photos I submitted during sign-up. A dermatology provider assigned to my account adjusts the active ingredients every few months based on how my skin responds, which makes it feel more like a medical service than a beauty subscription. Formula combines 3 active ingredients, currently azelaic acid, clindamycin. Niacinamide, in a single bottle that replaces the 4 or 5 separate products I was using before. The simplification of my routine from 15 minutes to 3 minutes is the practical benefit that keeps me subscribed. Curology publishes the concentration of each active ingredient on the label, which most drugstore skincare brands don't do. Transparency lets me compare their formulations to prescription alternatives and understand what I am putting on my face. Price is $30 per month for the custom formula plus a cleanser and a moisturizer, and the competitor comparison that matters is a dermatologist visit. That would cost $150 with insurance and result in a prescription for the same ingredients at a pharmacy. I want to keep using it because my acne has improved noticeably since October. Before-and-after photos in the app track the progress in a way that I find motivating. Messaging from the provider is responsive, usually within 24 hours. Ability to text a dermatology professional about a breakout without scheduling an appointment is a convenience that I did not know I needed until I had it. Downside is that the formula takes 2 to 3 months to show results, which requires patience that most people do not have with a subscription product. I nearly canceled after the first month when my skin got worse before it got better. I think Curology works because it solves a real access problem, putting dermatological care within reach of people who can't afford regular office visits. Subscription model ensures continuity of treatment that one-time purchases can't provide.
