#130 of 383Citi Bike Dock System
Personal photo: a row of Citi Bike docking stations on a city sidewalk with blue bikes locked in place, the solar panel visible on the station kiosk, and the spring-loaded dock latches catching the light.
Citi Bike dock stations placed every 3 to 4 blocks in the city center make bike sharing work because the density of docks means you are never more than a 2-minute walk from dropping off your ride. Each docking mechanism is a steel post with a spring-loaded latch that locks the front wheel. That physical click when you dock the bike confirms that the rental has ended, and that tactile feedback is more trustworthy than a notification on a screen. I've mixed feelings about the pricing because the $17 monthly pass is fair but the $4 single-ride fee discourages casual use. People who would benefit most from occasional trips are the ones paying the highest per-ride cost. Stations run on solar panels with no grid connection, and the electrical independence means the city can add docks without digging up streets.
