One jacket I own has hidden zipper pockets on the inside, 1 on each side of the chest. This design solves a problem I did not know I had until I used them for a week. Invisible from the outside, no visible zipper pull or seam break, the pockets sit against your body so the contents, phone, wallet, passport, don't bounce or shift when you move. A water-resistant YKK reverse coil zipper opens smoothly with one hand. Soft mesh pocket lining prevents the contents from sticking to your skin through the jacket material. Through 3 airports on a recent trip I kept my passport and boarding pass in the hidden pocket without ever worrying about pickpockets or losing anything. Not having to pat my pockets every 5 minutes brought immediate relief. Photographers' vests have had internal pockets for decades, but integrating them into a jacket that looks like normal outerwear without the utilitarian bulk is a clever design move. Pocket depth is calibrated so a phone sits vertically without poking above the opening, and placement is high enough on the chest that bending over doesn't dump things out. Maybe $8 in manufacturing cost covers the extra zipper and fabric. A $30 premium for this feature in any jacket I buy from now on would be worth it. Crowded places and transit are specifically when I reach for this jacket, because knowing my belongings are secure against my body rather than exposed in an outside pocket changes how I move through those spaces.
