Switching to silicone earplugs for sleeping revealed the difference from foam ones: silicone molds to the shape of my ear canal and creates a seal that blocks sound more evenly across frequencies. Foam plugs always felt like they were pushing against my ears, and by morning they had half-fallen out. Silicone ones stay put and I forget I am wearing them within 5 minutes of lying down. A small case on my nightstand holds them, and each pair lasts about 2 weeks before the material stops holding its shape. Noise reduction is rated at 22 decibels, enough to turn my roommate's late-night TV from disruptive to barely audible. Street noise from the road outside drops to a low hum. Sleeping deeper and waking up less groggy was not something I expected from a $6 product. Putting them in has a sensory quality of its own: you roll the silicone into a ball, press it gently into your ear. It slowly expands to fill the space with a soft, warm pressure. Quiet creates its own sensation, making you aware of your own breathing and heartbeat, which is calming rather than unsettling.
