The loft bed in my dorm room raises the mattress 5 feet off the floor, putting the desk underneath. Vertical stacking of sleep and work in a 120-square-foot room is the most honest piece of space design I've encountered on campus. Building up instead of out gives you floor area for a rug, a bookshelf, and a chair that wouldn't fit with a ground-level bed. The metal frame is adjustable so you can set the height to clear the desk without bumping your head when sitting up. The setup forces you to think about where everything goes. Constraint makes the small room feel intentional rather than cramped. On each floor, a vocabulary develops around loft configurations. Comparing who has the best under-bed layout becomes a bonding topic during the first week.
