Personal photo of a Fairphone 5 lying face-up on a desk, the translucent back case partially removed to reveal the modular components inside, a small screwdriver resting beside it.

Fairphone built the Fairphone 5 so you can replace the battery, screen, camera, and speaker yourself using a single screwdriver. Modularity is a direct argument against how most phone manufacturers design their products. The company publishes exactly where their minerals come from and which factories assemble the parts. Running stock Android, the phone performs well enough for everything I do. Knowing I can swap the battery in 2 years instead of replacing the whole device makes the $700 price feel more rational.
