#90 of 420Cast Iron Skillet
Press shot: A well-seasoned cast iron skillet photographed from above on a wooden surface, the cooking surface dark and glossy from years of use.
The dining hall on my floor has this cast iron skillet that someone left behind 3 years ago. Everyone just uses it now. The surface has built up so much seasoning that eggs slide right off without any oil. You can feel the weight of all those meals when you pick it up. A cooking tool that actually gets better with age instead of worse is worth admiring. Every dorm kitchen has nonstick pans with scratched coatings needing replacement every semester. This thing just keeps improving. The handle gets hot and you need a towel, which is a real inconvenience. People still reach for it first every time. It connects everyone on the floor to the same object in a way a shared microwave never could.
