Converse lets you customize Chuck Taylors online by choosing the canvas color, tongue, laces, rubber toe cap, and even adding text or graphics to the sidewall. I built a pair with black canvas, red laces, and my initials on the heel patch for $85. The customizer loads a 3D model that spins so you can see every angle. Options are constrained enough that it's hard to make an ugly combination, a design choice respecting the shoe's proportions. The Chuck Taylor silhouette hasn't changed substantially since 1917. Customizing within that iconic frame feels like adding a personal layer to a shared cultural object. My friends noticed immediately, and the initials on the heel sparked more conversation than any expensive sneaker I've worn. Designing shoes yourself is a different feeling than choosing them off a shelf.
