Kinfolk magazine built an entire visual language around restraint. Extending far beyond the magazine itself, that influence has shaped restaurants, retail spaces, and social media feeds that share its palette of whites, grays, muted greens, and natural wood. Muted natural light fills the photography, and layouts leave generous white space around text and images. Subjects tend toward slow domestic activities like bread baking, flower arranging, and linen folding. After launching in 2011, within a few years the Kinfolk aesthetic had become a recognizable style that signaled a certain kind of aspirational simplicity. I admire the consistency of the editorial vision even as I wonder whether the lifestyle it portrays is more performance than reality. Achieving the carefully unstaged look requires significant staging.
