The Kindle Paperwhite added a dark mode that inverts the e-ink display to white text on a black background. Reading at night with this setting is easier on my eyes than any backlit screen because e-ink doesn't emit light the same way an LCD does. It just illuminates the surface gently from the edge. Text looks printed, sharp and clear. The warm light option adds a slight amber tint that reduces blue light without needing separate glasses. Dark mode plus warm tone plus e-ink eliminates every objection I had about reading on a screen instead of paper. Amazon designed the interface to disappear. No notifications, no app store, no browser worth using. Intentional limitation keeps attention on the book. Battery lasts about 3 weeks of regular use, and the waterproofing means I can read in the bath without anxiety. At $140, the Paperwhite sits between the basic Kindle and the Oasis. Dark mode alone justifies the upgrade from the base model.
