#38 of 420Uniqlo vs Muji Oxford Shirt
Personal photo: A white Uniqlo oxford shirt and a white Muji button-down laid side by side on a bed, showing differences in collar shape, fabric texture, and button finish.
Uniqlo oxford cloth button-down and the Muji organic cotton button-down look similar on a hanger but the differences show up in how they wear. Owning both, each one is better for a different situation. Uniqlo version is slightly slimmer in the body with a smaller collar that lies flatter. Fabric is treated with a wrinkle-resistant finish so it looks acceptable pulled straight from a bag, which is why I pack it when I travel. Muji version is boxier with a softer, thicker cotton that wrinkles naturally and looks better with each wash as the fabric relaxes. On campus the rumpled look reads as intentional. Uniqlo is $30 and Muji is $40, and the $10 difference buys a noticeable upgrade in fabric weight and a slightly nicer collar roll. Stop treating these brands as interchangeable because they serve different philosophies, Uniqlo optimizing for performance and consistency while Muji optimizes for material quality and simplicity. Stitching on the Muji is finer and the buttons are a matte shell rather than plastic. Those details are subtle but they accumulate into a garment that feels more considered. Uniqlo dries faster, maintains its shape through more wash cycles, and comes in 12 colors versus Muji's 4. My ideal wardrobe has both, the Uniqlo for travel and the Muji for days when I care about texture. Comparison reveals how much design variation exists within what looks like a simple, standardized garment.
