#363 of 420Lo-Fi Study Playlists
Press shot: A stylized illustration of an anime character studying at a desk with headphones on, a rain-spattered window behind them, in the signature lo-fi aesthetic.
Lo-fi hip-hop playlists on streaming services all follow the same formula: slow beats, vinyl crackle, jazz piano samples, no lyrics. Tempo sits around 70-80 BPM and the tracks blend into each other so you never get jarred by a transition. I put one on when I need to write a paper and after 10 minutes I forget the music is playing, which is exactly what it should do. This genre barely existed 10 years ago and now there are entire channels with millions of followers built around the idea that music can be functional background rather than foreground. It works because the repetition is soothing without being boring, and the lo-fi production quality feels handmade unlike polished pop.
