Newer nickel-metal hydride rechargeable AA batteries hold a charge for months on the shelf and deliver 1.2 volts through the full discharge cycle. That means they work reliably in wireless mice, remotes, and controllers without the voltage drop that plagued older rechargeables. Upfront cost is about $12 for a 4-pack with charger versus $6 for disposable alkalines, but each battery lasts 500 to 1,000 cycles, so the math shifts fast. A single rechargeable replaces hundreds of disposable batteries that would go to landfill, and the reduction in packaging waste alone is visible. My charging station on the desk has 4 indicator lights that shift from red to green over 3 hours, a background process I check occasionally without urgency.
