Press shot: a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor high-tops in classic black canvas with white rubber toe caps and the ankle circle patch, laces loosely tied, photographed on a concrete surface.

Converse Chuck Taylor has been in production since 1917. Canvas upper with the vulcanized rubber sole and the circle patch on the ankle is a silhouette so established that changing any single element would make it a different shoe. Flat sole offers 0 arch support, which is honestly terrible for your feet if you wear them all day. Simplicity of the shape is the reason they work with jeans, shorts, dresses, and suits in a way that no athletic shoe can. I like that the high-top and low-top versions create 2 different proportions from the same basic pattern. All-black and all-white colorways disappear into an outfit while the colored canvas versions make a statement. Shoe costs about $55 and lasts a year of regular wear. Canvas softens and creases in patterns that make a broken-in pair look better than a new 1. I want a couple more pairs because the color range goes deep into shades I've not tried yet.
