#119 of 420Electric Kettle for Dorm Life
Personal photo: A compact white electric kettle on a dorm desk next to a mug and a box of tea bags, with a textbook and laptop visible in the background.
My electric kettle has become the most used appliance in my dorm room. It turns a power outlet into a kitchen for tea, instant ramen, oatmeal, and pour-over coffee. The 1-liter capacity is enough for 2 large mugs. Water boils in under 4 minutes, faster than walking to the communal kitchen and waiting for a stovetop kettle. Auto-shutoff means I can start it and go brush my teeth without worrying about leaving a hot appliance running unattended in a room full of flammable textbooks. The cord detaches from the base so you can carry just the kettle to the sink and back. That small design choice prevents the cord from getting wet during filling. It cost $22 and I use it at least 3 times a day, making it the best dollars-per-use purchase I've made since starting college.
