#104 of 420Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones
Editorial: Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones worn by a person studying at a coffee shop table, with a laptop open and a paper coffee cup beside them.
Sony has been making the best noise-cancelling headphones for 4 generations running. The XM5 continued that streak by getting lighter and simpler while keeping the sound quality that made the XM4 a campus staple. The headband folds flat instead of inward, fitting into a slimmer case. I can also see how the new hinge design might wear out faster than the old one. Noise cancellation adapts to your environment automatically, going stronger in a loud coffee shop and backing off in a quiet library. With 30-hour battery life, I charge them once a week. For something I wear 4 hours a day, that reliability matters more than any audio specification. Multipoint Bluetooth lets me switch between my laptop and phone without disconnecting and reconnecting. That sounds like a small feature but it eliminates a frustration I dealt with daily on older headphones. Being part of a campus where half the students wear the same model creates this unspoken acknowledgment: these are the ones that work. Sony priced them at $350, and the XM4 immediately dropped to $250. The real question is whether the incremental improvements justify the premium when the older model is still excellent.
