Personal photo: a handmade stoneware mug with a mottled blue-gray glaze sitting on a cluttered desk next to a keyboard and notebook.

The mug on my desk has a thumb rest built into the handle and a glaze that pools darker in the low spots. I reach for it every morning before any of the other 4 mugs in my cabinet. Heavier than a machine-made mug, with a slightly uneven rim. It feels like a specific object rather than a unit of production. The potter left the bottom unglazed so you can see the raw clay underneath. A warm reddish brown that contrasts with the slate blue glaze on the outside. I want more things in my apartment that feel like this one does.
