#95 of 357Hay Tray Table
Editorial/lifestyle: a powder-coated khaki metal tray table holding a ceramic mug and a paperback book, positioned next to a linen sofa on a light wood floor.
Hay's tray table is a metal side table where the top lifts off and becomes a serving tray, a dual-purpose furniture idea that usually sounds better than it works but in this case actually works. Tray sits in a cradle formed by the folding legs. Whole thing collapses flat for storage, so you can pull it out when you need extra surface area and put it away when you don't. Powder-coated finish comes in about 15 colors and the proportions are sized so it works equally well next to a sofa, beside a bed, or on a balcony. I have the medium size in khaki and it holds a coffee cup, a book, and my phone without feeling crowded. Legs fold with a satisfying click and the tray lifts off cleanly, small mechanical details that make the daily interaction feel considered. At around $85 for the medium, reasonable for a piece that fills 2 roles and takes up almost no space when it isn't in use. Light enough to carry with one hand, I keep finding new spots for it around my apartment.
