Personal photo: an e-ink display clock on a white wall showing the time in crisp black digits on a paper-like screen, with a minimal rectangular frame and no visible buttons.

E-ink display clocks use the same screen technology as a Kindle, and the numbers are sharp, paper-like, and visible in direct sunlight without any backlight glow at night. Screens refresh so slowly that you can sometimes catch the digits dissolving and re-forming, a small animation that happens once a minute and gives the device a mechanical quality that LCD screens lack. Designs I keep seeing online are minimal to the point of austerity, a white rectangle, black numbers, no buttons on the face, sometimes a temperature reading in smaller type below the time. Appeal is that a clock should be visible without demanding attention, and e-ink achieves that by being calm unlike glowing screens. Power consumption is so low that some models run for a year on a single battery. Hang it on a wall and forget it exists until you check the time.
