Fire Escape Gardens

Fire escapes on older apartment buildings in my neighborhood have turned into small gardens, with herbs and tomato plants in pots wedged between the railings and the wall. Ironwork creates natural shelves and the south-facing ones get enough sun for basil to survive through October. Fascinating that a structure designed for emergency exit became a growing space just because people needed somewhere to put plants.
