Herman Miller Aeron chair has been in production since 1994 and it's still the default chair in most offices that care about ergonomics. A mesh seat that lets air flow through the back and bottom is the detail I want most because every other desk chair I've sat in traps heat against my body after an hour. At $1,400 new, it costs more than my monthly rent. I want one because 8 hours a day in a bad chair has given me lower back pain that no amount of stretching fully fixes. Lumbar support on the Aeron is adjustable and the tilt mechanism lets you lean back with resistance that matches your body weight. People who own them say the initial cost disappears once you calculate the per-hour rate across 10 or 15 years of use.
