Instacart puts a personal shopper in a grocery store who picks your items, packs your bags, and delivers them to your door within an hour or 2. Service works because it replaces the most time-consuming errand most people do every week with a fee ranging from free for large orders to about $7 for smaller ones. An app interface mirrors the store layout, letting you browse by aisle and add items to your cart. Real-time communication with your shopper means they can ask about substitutions before making them rather than guessing. I used it every week during finals because the 90 minutes I would have spent at the store were worth more than the $5 delivery fee. Shoppers picked better produce than I expected, which is the main concern people have about someone else choosing their food. Behind the convenience is the shopper experience. Pay structure, a combination of batch pay, tips, and peak pricing, has been criticized for not providing a living wage, especially when you account for the shopper's gas, insurance, and vehicle maintenance. Costco and Whole Foods both offer similar delivery through their own apps, but Instacart covers multiple stores in one order, which is convenient when you need specialty items your regular grocery store doesn't carry. Tipping is built into the app and defaults to a generous percentage. The company has been criticized for adjusting to subsidize their own delivery costs, a practice they have publicly committed to stopping after public backlash. I have mixed feelings about the service because the convenience is genuine but the labor model raises questions about who benefits most from the efficiency gains. The customer saving time or the company capturing margin on someone else's shopping labor.
