Pottery Wheel Classes

The pottery wheel at the community studio near campus costs $8 per hour to use. Centering clay on a spinning wheel is one of the few activities I've found that requires enough concentration to completely shut out every other thought. The process starts with wedging the clay, kneading it to remove air bubbles, and then throwing it onto the center of the wheel with enough force to stick. The first 10 minutes of every session are spent trying to get the clay centered. Is a skill that looks easy when someone experienced does it but is maddeningly difficult when you are learning. Clay responds to the pressure and speed of your hands in real time. The feedback loop between intention and result is immediate in a way that most creative processes are not. An instructor at the studio teaches through demonstration and occasional correction, adjusting your hand position or telling you to slow down. Teaching style works because the skill is physical rather than conceptual. I started going in September and I can now make a basic bowl or cup that's roughly symmetrical and holds liquid. Sounds like a low bar but represents about 20 hours of practice. Firing and glazing adds another 2 weeks before you see the finished piece, and the delay creates an anticipation that makes the reveal genuinely exciting. At the studio you find a mix of students and retirees. Getting covered in clay while trying to make something beautiful has a leveling quality that other social spaces don't have. I have given away most of the pieces I have made because the process is more valuable to me than the product. Each bowl or cup that I give someone carries the specific memory of making it.
