Allbirds launched with a single shoe made from merino wool and a marketing pitch about sustainability, and the combination worked well enough to build a billion-dollar company. Wool Runners feel soft and lightweight right out of the box, more like slippers than sneakers. No visible logo except a small bird on the heel gives them a clean look that works with almost anything. The merino upper breathes better than synthetic mesh in warm weather and the shoe is machine-washable. Sounds like a gimmick until you actually throw a muddy pair in the washer and they come out looking new. The sustainability angle is real but complicated. Soles are made from sugarcane-based EVA foam instead of petroleum, the wool is sourced from New Zealand farms that meet specific animal welfare standards. The company publishes a carbon footprint number for every product. But they also ship shoes in individual boxes across the Pacific. The shoes wear out faster than traditional leather sneakers, so the environmental math depends on how you define the comparison.
