Press shot of a small white smart plug inserted into a wall outlet with a lamp cord plugged into it, a bedside lamp glowing warmly in the background of a dimly lit room.

I put smart plugs on my bedside lamp and my string lights and now they turn on at sunset and off at midnight without me touching anything. Coming home to warm light instead of a dark room has changed how my apartment feels in the evening. At $8 each, the plugs connect to my phone over wifi. A scheduling interface lets you set different times for each day of the week and sync to local sunrise and sunset times so the schedule adjusts with the seasons. I want every light in my apartment on a schedule because the difference between walking into a lit room and walking into a dark 1 is a feeling, not just a convenience. Warm light already on when you open the door makes a rented apartment feel more like a home. Small enough not to block the adjacent outlet, each plug sits between the wall outlet and the lamp cord. My roommate noticed the lights and asked how I did it. Explaining that it was $16 and a 5-minute app setup was satisfying because the effect looks like it required more effort than it did.
