Personal photo: A large-format inkjet printer in a print shop producing a colorful poster, with finished rolled prints in paper tubes visible on a shelf behind the machine.

The print shop 2 blocks from campus does custom poster printing on a large-format inkjet. Watching the machine produce a 24-by-36-inch print in about 4 minutes is one of those manufacturing moments that makes you appreciate what digital fabrication has made accessible. The shop charges $15 per poster on matte paper and $22 on glossy, and students use it for everything from class project presentations to dorm room art. I had a photo from a trip printed at 24 by 36 and the detail at that scale revealed textures and colors that I never noticed on my phone screen. Made me think differently about what a photograph is for. The owner trims and rolls each poster by hand. That care with a $15 print makes the transaction feel personal in a way that ordering from an online service doesn't.
