Editorial: an IKEA KALLAX 4x4 shelf unit in white against a wall, filled with a mix of books, vinyl records, storage boxes, and a small plant, with warm overhead lighting.

IKEA's KALLAX is a grid of open cubes that students have been using as bookshelves, room dividers. Record storage since it replaced the EXPEDIT in 2014, and the design is so simple that its versatility comes entirely from the user. The 4x4 version costs $70 and holds vinyl records perfectly because the internal dimensions match 12-inch album covers with about an inch to spare. It solves multiple problems without claiming to solve any of them, because IKEA just calls it a shelf unit and lets people figure out the rest.
