Press shot: A row of pharmacy sunscreen bottles in various sizes and shapes on a drugstore shelf, showing the visual similarity of white and yellow labels.

Pharmacy sunscreen packaging actively works against the user experience. Every bottle looks nearly identical: white or yellow label, SPF number in bold, fine print about broad spectrum and water resistance requiring reading glasses to parse. Pump mechanisms leak. Flip-top caps clog with dried sunscreen. Bottles won't stand upright in a beach bag. Best thing a sunscreen brand could do is make the bottle work as well as the formula. SPF 50 from any major brand performs about the same, but nobody enjoys applying it.
