#302 of 383Aeropress Coffee Maker
Press shot: An Aeropress coffee maker sitting on top of a ceramic mug with the plunger partially pressed, next to a bag of whole beans and a hand grinder.
Aeropress is the only coffee maker I've used where the instruction manual is wrong and that's fine because the internet figured out better methods within a year of the product launching. Official method has you pour water through the grounds and press. Inverted method that nearly everyone uses now produces a cleaner cup because it steeps the grounds before pressing. Device itself is a $40 plastic tube with a rubber plunger, a paper filter, and a scoop. Hario and Fellow sell grinders that pair well with it. Community around Aeropress recipes is deep enough that there is an annual championship where baristas compete with custom techniques. I like that the whole thing fits in a travel bag and cleans up in 10 seconds by popping the puck of grounds into the trash. Paper filters make the coffee smoother than a French press, and the pressure from the plunger extracts flavor faster than a pour-over. For someone who wants good coffee in a dorm room without spending $200 on equipment, it's the obvious answer.
