I keep seeing ads for clothing rental services that promise to fix fast fashion guilt. Looking more closely at them, the less convinced I am they actually reduce waste. Logistics of shipping garments back and forth, dry cleaning each item between rentals. Packaging everything in plastic mailers creates a carbon footprint that probably cancels out whatever gets saved by not buying new. Concept works for occasion wear like a formal dress you will only use once. Apps push everyday rotation as the main use case and that just feels like consumption with extra steps. Sizing data these platforms collect is valuable, and maybe that's where the real product is. Subscription model makes it hard to quit once your closet starts depending on it. It's a clever solution to a problem, but I am not sure it's the right one.
