Personal photo: two takeout bowls side by side on a cafeteria table, a Sweetgreen bowl on the left with greens and grains and a smaller portion, a Chipotle bowl on the right piled high with rice, beans, and chicken.

Sweetgreen and Chipotle sit next to each other near campus. I eat at both, but how each handles the same basic format, a customized bowl with your choice of protein and toppings, reveals a lot about 2 companies solving the same problem with different values. Sweetgreen charges $15 for a bowl with roasted chicken and seasonal vegetables. Chipotle charges $10 for a burrito bowl with double chicken and rice. Chipotle's portion is about twice what Sweetgreen gives you, and that matters when you're budgeting meals as a student. Both are good. But I go to Chipotle 3 times for every 1 Sweetgreen visit because the math is hard to argue with when you're hungry at 2 PM with $12 in your account.
