The Ethique shampoo bar sits on a bamboo tray in my shower and looks like a bar of soap. When I rub it between wet hands, it produces a lather that cleans my hair as well as any bottled shampoo I've used. One bar lasts about 3 months, which Ethique claims equals 3 bottles of liquid shampoo. Ingredients are concentrated plant-based surfactants and essential oils. No water in the formula is the key to the whole proposition. Shipping a solid bar instead of a bottle that's 80% water reduces weight and packaging waste dramatically. My bathroom shelf was full of plastic bottles and I wanted to see how many I could eliminate. The shampoo bar was the easiest swap because performance difference is minimal and convenience is actually better once you get used to the format. As it wears down, the bar develops a smooth, slightly concave shape. Edges round over time. Watching it change shape with each use has a satisfying geometry. Ethique is a New Zealand B Corp using compostable packaging. Their commitment to solid formulations across the entire product line, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, suggests a design philosophy rather than a marketing strategy. I've recommended the bars to 4 friends and 3 switched permanently. That's a higher conversion rate than any product I've ever suggested. The pitch is simple: same result, less waste, no plastic.
