I've been going back and forth between Lululemon and Nike for running shorts all semester. The Lululemon Pace Breaker is winning because the liner is more comfortable and the waistband doesn't roll up during a 5-mile run the way the Nike Flex does. Fabric has a 4-way stretch that feels like wearing nothing. The 7-inch inseam sits at a length that works for both running and grabbing coffee afterward without feeling underdressed. Colors are restrained compared to Nike, mostly dark navies and blacks and one muted olive I keep gravitating toward. Lululemon understood early that men who want performance clothing also want it to look like regular clothing rather than athletic gear. Sizing runs true. Quality after 30 washes is still consistent, no pilling on the liner or fading on the shell. At $68 per pair I'd expect that, but plenty of brands at the same price don't deliver. A second pair makes sense, but I keep hesitating because $136 for 2 pairs of shorts feels excessive, even though cost-per-wear math will almost certainly justify it by year's end. The zip pocket on the right hip holds my phone without bouncing. That single detail eliminates the need for an armband or belt, one less thing to think about before a run. A friend who works at a running store told me Lululemon shorts have the highest return rate of any brand they carry because people try them once and come back to buy 3 more pairs. Based on my experience, I believe that.
