#80 of 363Japanese Ofuro Soaking Tub

Japanese ofuro is a deep soaking tub designed for immersion up to the shoulders. Deeper and shorter than a Western bathtub, the proportions change the bathing experience from lying down in shallow water to sitting upright in water that covers your entire torso. Traditional material is hinoki cypress, a wood that releases a warm, citrusy scent when wet and has natural antibacterial properties. Filling the bathroom with a forest-like aroma, a hinoki tub makes the room feel like a different place. At 22-24 inches deep versus 14-16 for a Western tub, the immersion is substantially different. Compact footprint, about 4 feet long, means it fits in a standard bathroom without requiring a renovation. Submerging to shoulder depth in hot water appeals to me unlike a shallow bath, which is why I want one. Japanese bathing tradition treats the tub as a place for relaxation after washing, not as a place to get clean, which reframes the whole purpose of the experience.
