Personal photo: a wet cobblestone path leading between two brick buildings on a university campus, with fallen leaves scattered across the uneven stone surface and rain puddles reflecting the overcast sky.

The cobblestone path between the chapel and the main quad has been there since the 1940s. Every stone is a slightly different shade of gray and brown because they were sourced locally rather than ordered from a catalog. Walking on it in the rain is a specific experience. The uneven surface forces you to slow down. Wet stone has a color depth that disappears when it dries. The university replaced the path on the east side of campus with stamped concrete a few years ago. The difference is obvious. Concrete pretends to be stone but flattens everything out. Real cobblestones have a texture you can feel through your shoes. Nobody has tried to "improve" this path with better drainage or smoother grading. The imperfection is what makes it feel like it belongs to a specific place rather than to a contractor's portfolio.
