Personal photo: A worn skateboard with scuffed grip tape and scratched deck leaning against a bike rack on a college campus, with a paved path visible behind it.

I skate to class most days. My route follows a path that avoids the 3 worst sidewalk cracks and the storm drain grate near the library that catches wheels. The board is scratched. Grip tape is worn smooth in the spots where my feet always land. Wheels make a low hum on fresh asphalt that I feel in my ankles and shins. Seven minutes versus 15 walking. Air on my face in the morning wakes me up faster than coffee.
