I reorganized my desk with Muji's acrylic organizer system last month. The difference is less about aesthetics and more about the fact that I can actually find my pens now. The system is modular. You buy individual trays and holders and stack them however your desk layout demands. I bought 4 pieces for a total of $38: a 5-compartment pen holder, a 2-tier letter tray, a small drawer unit for paper clips and thumb drives. A flat tray that holds my glasses at night. Each piece is made from clear acrylic that looks like glass but doesn't shatter when you knock it off the edge of your desk. I've done that twice already. Dimensions are precise enough that the pieces sit flush against each other with no wobble. You can see everything inside without opening drawers, which means I actually put things back where they belong. For 3 semesters I had been using a shoebox and a coffee mug. The upgrade makes me realize how much mental energy I was spending just looking for stuff. My desk is 48 inches wide, and the organizer system takes up about 12 inches on the right side. That leaves enough room for my laptop and a notebook. Muji's design philosophy, where everything is reduced to its essential form, shows in these pieces. Nothing to remove. When my workspace is organized, I sit down and start working faster instead of shuffling things around for 10 minutes.
