Personal photo of a campus bike repair station showing tools on retractable cables mounted to a metal post, an air pump at the base, a bicycle leaning against the station, campus buildings in the background.

Self-service bike repair stations installed around campus have a set of tools chained to a post and an air pump at the base. Tools include a set of Allen wrenches, tire levers, a Phillips and a flathead screwdriver, and a chain tool. The station solves the problem of needing a minor repair and not having tools with you. A loose seat or a flat tire can be fixed in 5 minutes if the right tools are within reach. I like how the design assumes competence rather than helplessness. Tools are there, no instructions, no attendant, just the assumption that a person with a bicycle probably knows how to adjust a seat height or tighten a brake caliper. Air pump gauge reads PSI, and filling a tire takes about 30 seconds, and the feedback of the rising needle tells you when to stop. Weathered from being outdoors year-round, the steel has a light rust that looks honest rather than neglected.
