Substack built a platform where individual writers publish newsletters directly to subscribers. Stripped of everything that makes traditional media frustrating, no editors, no algorithms, no advertising, it's just a writer and an inbox. A 10% cut of paid subscription revenue is the business model, and free newsletters cost nothing. Platform incentives are aligned with the writer's success rather than with engagement metrics or advertiser satisfaction. Design is intentionally plain, white background, black text, minimal formatting options. Result looks like email from a friend rather than content from a publication, and that intimacy is the product. Writers I subscribe to include a food critic, a foreign policy analyst, and a local politics reporter who left her newspaper job. The quality of their work has not decreased without institutional backing because the audience pays them directly and accountability flows straight from reader to writer. Recognizing the value in a single person's voice and building infrastructure that gets out of the way rather than shaping the output is what I admire about Substack. Over 35 million active subscriptions exist on the platform and some top writers earn over $1 million per year, proving the model works at scale without the traditional publication apparatus. Reading experience is notably different from a news website, no pop-ups, no cookie banners, no related articles sidebar, just the writing. Clean delivery makes me more likely to read the entire piece rather than scanning and closing. My concern is that top earners attract most of the revenue and the long tail of smaller writers struggles. Distribution is true in every creative market and the baseline of keeping 90% of revenue is still better than most alternatives. Comment sections on Substack are quieter and more thoughtful than on any social platform, partly because the audience self-selects by paying and partly because the format discourages drive-by reactions. Recommendations from writers I follow carry more trust than any algorithm because their reputation is directly tied to their judgment. One bad recommendation costing them subscribers in a way that a bad algorithmic suggestion costs a platform nothing.
